But, when we become parents ourselves, we don’t always know what we’re doing (read: ever). And for many of us THAT is where the amazing experiential wisdom of parent bloggers can offer some much-needed guidance and support.
These fountains of parenting knowledge and experience help us feel like we actually have things a little bit under control. Whether they’re showing us that they are just as lost as we are, or helping to guide us through our challenges, these bloggers make parenting just a teeny, tiny bit easier - and that makes all the difference.

Life as a Daddy Blogger - Interview with Brent Almond
Father’s Day is just around the corner, and we’ve already talked about how great a holiday this can be for an influencer marketing campaign, but we wanted to take a look at what it’s like on the other side of the screen. So we managed to speak to one of our favorite daddy bloggers out there right now to find out what it’s really like to chronicle your parenting journey for the whole world to see.
Before we dive into the questions, let’s take a minute to meet the daddy blogger we’ll be chatting to.
Brent Almond designed his blog just one year after becoming a father. As a graphic designer, he was looking for a way to meld parenthood and designer together into one space - and Designer Daddy was born.
He caused a sensation online with his creative and adorable lunchbox notes that he left in his son’s lunch every day. From superheroes, to inspirational figures - these notes caused quite a storm on Instagram, and are still going on today. Check them out at @superlunchnotes on Instagram.
His blog focuses on a mixture of craft projects, parenting experiences, life as part of an LGBTQ+ family, and life as a gay dad with an adopted son. His engaging work has drawn the attention of Buzzfeed, ABC.com, Huffington Post, and Babble online, as well as appearances on Good Morning America and The Today Show.
We were lucky enough to catch Brent between lunch notes, design work, and dad duties to talk about his life as a daddy blogger, and how he feels about the blogging landscape right now. Here’s what he had to say.
How did you become a daddy blogger?
Brent: I'm a graphic designer and so, when I became a dad, I wanted a way to kind of mix my creativity with my parenting. My creative side and my graphic design stuff tends to permeate everything I do anyway. I had been following a few blogs - not really dad blogs - it started out as more of a kind of design blog. I thought it would be fun, I can review all these cool products and all the crappy ones, and write about it here. I thought it would be pretty easy to do!
But, then I actually became a dad and I realized that I didn't have the time, or the energy, to do all that! There are some people that do, but just not me. My first post was actually on my son’s first birthday, and I talked about the birth announcement that I had designed for him. So it was a good combination of me as a designer, and me as a dad. But, it had a much more personal slant to it so that definitely set the tone. A lot of it is a personal journal and that's where it has roots for me.
What do you enjoy most about sharing your parenting journey with your audience?
Brent: I mean, the times that the stuff that I write really resonates with a lot of people - that’s the best part. Whether it's seeing a piece go viral, or getting a lot of really great comments on a post, or even getting a private email telling me how much they've been inspired, or how much they want to be a father now. Those kinds of moments of connecting with people are what I really enjoy.
What has been your favorite parenting moment to date?
Brent: I think one of my favorites- because it kind of included a lot of parts of my life- was when the same-sex marriage law was passed in the US. I went and got my son out of school and went down to the supreme court to celebrate with everybody, so we got to walk around the supreme court and meet other parents and people who were out to celebrate. And, there was a journalist from a Chinese social media page I think, that interviewed us and took some really amazing pictures - there's one of us walking out the supreme court and I still get goosebumps when I look at it. I wrote a blog post about it actually.
But I loved being able to just share that moment with him, living in the nation's capital and being really proud to be a dad, and be a husband, and be an American - it seems like a long time ago now but that was a really deep moment. To just take such a special meaningful day trip with my son was just so special to me.
Why do you think mommy and daddy bloggers are so popular right now?
Brent: Well it’s funny, if you talk to bloggers that have been doing it a few years longer than me they'll say that blogging is dead. The original way of doing it- where you write a blog post, people subscribe to your blog, and leave comments all in the space of the blog- that just doesn't happen anymore. Now it's much more about social media - there are a lot more moving pieces. Whether that's Facebook, or Instagram, or videos, or YouTube, or whatever! And I think a lot of it has to do with the nature of the culture and how much of it is experienced within the context of social media. That's where bloggers live, and I think it’s just been a snowball effect over the last few years.
And, the fact that brands are really trying to utilize that audience a lot more has an impact too. Not just brands, but other media outlets, talk shows, magazines, and newspapers - they all have an online presence, so will utilize bloggers as experts or be guests on their shows so it's just like an endless supply of resources.
Why do you think that more dads are starting their own blogs right now?
Brent: Well, I think it also coincides with the fact that more and more dads are becoming really involved parents. They’re not just the typical kind of dad that goes to work, while mom stays at home with the kids. There are more dads now that work from home, more dads are stay-at-home parents, there are more gay dads, and more dads want to be more involved with every stage of parenting. And they want to share that experience.
And finally, what do you love most about being a Dad?
Brent: This is the question I couldn't figure out a quick answer for! Gosh... I mean, I think one thing I've always said from the beginning - being a dad sometimes I've never felt older, and sometimes I've also never felt younger!
And, it has been such a joy to share all my experiences growing up with my son. This weekend, for example, we watched both of the Tron movies and I've got to introduce so many different characters and stories to him through the lunch notes. And, it’s the whole passing on your legacy and seeing what they're attracted to. But, when it’s something that you really love too - it's amazing being able to connect with another part of yourself like that.
